Backup Exec 2010 VSS error due to external USB drive

I have two Win2k8 R2 64bit servers (DC & Exch).  I am running Backup Exec 2010 R3 on the DC server and the Backup Exec Exchange Agent on the Exch server.  After attaching a USB drive to the Exch server Backup Exec would fail with a VSS error.  If I unplug the drive error goes away.  I am not attemting to back up the USB drive, just having it attached causes the error.

I have come across a similar article here ("Backup Exec 2010 VSS error", dated 16-Aug-2012), but I am not quite sure of the correction and how it would apply to my setup with the exchange server.

Any help or direction for a fix would be greatly appreciated.
