Backup Exec 2014: Failed Restore With Exchange 2013 (Mailbox Item)

I need a solution

I attempt to restore a mailbox item on Exchange 2013, but get Final error: 0xe00003bf - Cannot open one or more mail messages because of unknown Exchange Web Service errors.  Review the job log for more information.

Article TECH190749 says the cause is that during the restore process Backup Exec tries to establish Exchange Web Services (EWS) connection on the mailbox server instead of the Client Access Server (CAS) which results in the failure. This may be true, however, our Exchange 2013 server is not only the mailbox server but is also CAS.  The only workaround is restoring to PST (Disclaimer: the server that you restore the PST to needs Outlook installed.)  Not a bad workaround if you only have a couple of items here and there to restore, but what if I need to do a brick-level restore of the whole mailbox?  Can it even do a brick-level restore?

Backup Exec 2014 Backup-to-Dedupe Duplicate-to-Tape

I need a solution

Some other questions have touched on this topic but they all seem to be just a little different than my scenario. The issue I seem to be having is the following.

I have a single Windows Server 2008 R2 server with Backup Exec 2014. I am not using CASO with a MMS. I run incrementals throughout the week and then a full backup to our dedupe storage on a SAN. I then run a duplicate of the previous Full backup job (not using scheduled option for duplicate job) to duplicate to tape for off-site storage. The intention is to retain two weeks of data on-site and more off-site. However, I see instances where, if the duplicate to tape job failes, the previous Full backup is no longer on the dedupe storage. This means we have to do the entire full backup over again and then duplicate to tape.

In addition, this concerns me because I wonder if all the other jobs we write to tape in this manner are also getting removed from dedupe storage after the job either completes successfully or fails. It concerns me because we want to retain some of those on-site.

Is this by design? Is there a way around this?

Backup Exec does not recognize media and keeps showing Library is offline

I need a solution

I have just replaced my failed library with a new (exact replacement) Quantum SuperLoader 3 Tape Library (single drive/2-8 tape magazines). It is correctly noted in Device Manager (Win Svr 2008 Std R2) and Backup Exec sees it and has installed drivers for it. My problem is that BE keeps placing it OFFLINE and shows "No Media", when in fact there are 16 LTO4 Ultrium tapes in the two magazines.

When I manually set it to ONLINE, and try to run a job (Inventory/Backup/Restore, etc), BE says that there is no media and shuts down the job, and resets the library to OFFLINE.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Dear,
I'm having trouble with Backup Exec 2012.
The full backup fileserver, is presenting glitches in some folders.
The error code is: e00084af - Directory or file was not found or accessed Could Not Be
The fileserver and Backup Exec server, both are windows 2008 R2. Both are with all updates installed, including backup exec.

Detail, the folder that the log indicates, that can not be accessed or does not exist, does exist! The administrator / domain admin, is owner of the folder, and also has full control permission.
I leave the option checked to not copy open files. Nonetheless, the JOB is aborted with the error described above.
Has anyone experienced this problem and managed to solve?

I need a solution

Dear,

Used here, the backup exec 2012.
There is the possibility of restarting one JOB, after it has been aborted?
Yesterday, we had a lack of electric power. At the moment, the backup exec was performing full backup fileserver.
LOG JOB indicated that the backup exec has lost communication with the fileserver.
It is possible to restart the JOB so she returns to work where you left off? Ie files that have already been copied, not copied again.
Thank you!

I need a solution

I have a server that is backed up with Symantec Backup Exec 2012 that I am having two issues with after locking the server down per DOD policy. The first seems to be authentication related and the second is related to the SQL 2005 components it adds.  Any advice to correct these issues will be much appreciated!

First, after the server was locked down, its services have stopped working.

 - Backup Exec Remote Agent (Running)

 - Backup Exec Agent Browser (Stopped)

 - Backup Exec Device & Media Service (Stopped)

 - Backup Exec Job Engine (Stopped)

 - Backup Exec Management Service (Stopped)

 - Backup Exec Server (Stopped)

 - Backup Exec Remote Agent (Running)

* All of the services that have stopped and do not start use a username (currently built in admin account) and the other two log in with LocalSystem.

Also, on scanning the server for vulnerabilities I am getting a few that I have not figured out how to correct due to the limited tools added for SQL 2005.

 - SQL does not enforce C2 auditing

 - SQL insecure password policy enforcement

 - SQL login does not have password expiration date

 - SA login does not have password expiration

 - SSL certificate weak encryption strength

Backup Exec 2014 - Hyper-V Integration Services mismatch

I need a solution

Hi There,

Running Backup Exec 2014 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter media server that also functions as our Hyper-V Host.

Using the V-Ray license.

When backing up virtual machines via the Hyper-V plugin, 2 of our virtual machines fail with error:

V-79-40960-38467 - Virtual machine "<servername>" has been excluded from the backup because it must be put in a saved state to back up

Then a message saying:

V-79-40960-38524 - The Hyper-V subsystem has reported that the Hyper-V Integration Services (HIS) inside the virtual machine do not match the version expected by the Hyper-V host.  This may lead to offline backups, update the Hyper-V Integration Services to ensure online backups can be performed whenever possible.

Now this is because the virtual machines in question are running Windows Server 2012. So, the version of the HIS on the 2012 server is actually newer than the one included with 2008 R2. I cannot install the 2008 R2 version of the HIS because if you try it says that the version installed is newer.

I've spoken with our Microsoft partner technical advisory team and they have confirmed that there is no issues with this configuration as the HIS are always fully backwards compatible, so it looks like Backup Exec is throwing up an uneeded exception.

Makes sense to check if the version of the HIS on a VM is too OLD, but not if it's newer that the host.

How do I get round this error? Symantec support initially said it was not their problem, it was Microsoft's. Microsoft have said it's not their problem, it's Symantec's.

Many Thanks,

Sam

Regroup jobs of same type for severall servers

I need a solution

Hi all.

I'm a pleased backup exec beta user.

Since version 2010 my jobs to the same type of backup where separated because of version 2012 could do a single job to severall servers at the same time.

So after severall weeks of good work with this last beta version that i'm using since beta program and i don't want any other i did a regroup to my SQL jobs for three servers to go on only one job.

Let me explain.

Server 1 Sql job 1

Server 2 Sql job 2

Server 3 Sql job 3

I hold it those three jobs and create a new job for servers:1,2,3 and the data to be backuped up is SQL server instance on wich of them.

The same schedule that i had before wich is :

Daily full backup at 22.00 and between 8.00 and 20.00 an incremental backup every 90 minutes.

Now the issue:

Only one of the servers, gives error wich is could not attach resource, and on the details i have that it couldn't connect to the SQL server instance.

I'm using the same authentication as earlier the same network protocol and even the same NIC i checked that also, but only one server is unable to do the backup.

On BE settings i have ports 10000 to 10031 to use to connect to servers, do i really need more......

Last to say, that the issue is on the incremental backup. The full backup works ok :)

I have attached the settings of the sql job and the selection of the failed server.

Backup Exec 2014 and EMC DD160 DeDupe Option.....can't see storage

I need a solution

Running Backup Exec 2014 and plan on backing up our Exchange Server to a EMC DD160 before backing it up to tape.  Within BE we can't see the DD160 in order to configure storage.

Tech Support said I would need the Dedupe option license before I would be able to see the DD160 device (or before it appeared as available storage)

Is this true?

New to the BE world so just checking.  Hopefully a license purchase will solve this issue

Cannot Select Datadomain as device for Restore Job

I need a solution

Hello Community,

OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2

Topology: One Server

Storage Devices: Dell Tape Library, EMC Datadomains (610 and 630)

Backup Exec 2012 ver. 14.0

Background:

Backups are generally set to backup first to the Data Domain 630, which then duplicates the backup set to the Data Domain 610, as well the Tape Library (a specific partition to be exact)

Problem:

When needing to restore a a backup, I have to retrieve the tape which is stored offsite. Not one of the Data Domains are selectable as the storage device to recover from.

What do I need to do to be able to restore the backups straight from the Data Domains without having to recall a Tape ?

No point in time backup sets in Disaster recovery SDR.

I've got the exact same issue as this thread which is unanswered. https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/simplified-disaster-recovery-wizard-doesnt-show-backup-sets

Trying to perform an SDR from a backup which is SDR enabled using the DR file which is copied to the RDX cartridge at the end of the backup shows no Point in time backup sets to recover. RDX cartridge contains all bkf files and DR file shows correct time stamp for when backup was completed. RDX cartridge works fine attempting to restore with backup exec in full os. Just not in SDR.

This is occuring on 3 seperate servers, all using BEX 2012. All pushing backups to RDX. Backups used to be able to be used in SDR. No changes have been made to backup configuration. Only BEX updates have been applied. SDR boot media is same media as was used on successful SDR 3 months ago.

Hi all,

This is my goal:

Old server: Win2008 R2, BE2014, SQL on SQL server
New server: Win2008R2, BE2014, SQL on  same server.

I used http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH67296 to migrate the DATA, CATALOG en SQL data to the new server. Everything went smooth.

Until I started the BE services. The Backup Exec Device and Media Service cannot started. I get error:

The Backup Exec Device and Media Service cannot start because it detected a database schema version mismatch.

Strange, because I run a succefull BEMIG.

Status Message: Backup Exec Device & Media Service Database, version 14.100000 is up to date. No changes are required.
Status Message: ADAMM upgrade ended

What can I do now?

Exchange 2010 Information Store Not Selectable via Hyper-V Host

I need a solution

I've been painfully moving a client from BE 2010 to BE 2014 over the last month.  I'm down to two issues left, and this is the main one.  Here's what I'm working with:

Two identical Windows Server 2012 R2 servers, one (Cookies) with 4 virtual machines being backed up, and the other (Cream) with 3 virtual machines, but only 1 being backed up.  An older physical Windows Server 2000 is also being backed up.  BE 2014 is running on a 2012 R2 VM that is running on Cream, but it is not currently being backed up itself.  The Exchange 2010 server, running on Server 2008 R2, is on Cream, and it is being backed up.

Everything is being backed up, but with exceptions on the Exchange VM - it won't do a GRT backup.  When I select the host (Cream) to setup a backup, and drill down to the Exchange VM, it does not show the Microsoft Information Store as an option or show Microsoft Exchange in the Backup Options.  If I start a new backup by selecting only the Exchange VM, it shows the Information Store and lists Exchange in the Backup Options.

I would think it should show the Store and the Exchange options when selecting the Exchange VM via the host, so I think that is the root of the problem.  I've gone through every list I can find to meet the requirement and the permissions, as here:  http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH184449 . I've installed the same Exchange Management Tools on the BE 2014 VM as are on the Exchange VM.  I've uninstalled and re-installed the BE Agent on the Exchange VM.  I've ran the BE Agent Utility on the Exchange VM and the Publishing and Security tabs have valid entries.  I've tried numerous other things that I can't remember right now.

Here are the errors from backing it up via the host machine:

Backup- VRTSRV::\\Cream.Dairy.local\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\Brutus2
V-79-57344-38732 - Virtual machine 'Brutus2' does not meet the requirements necessary for Backup Exec to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup.

V-79-57344-38769 - Virtual machine 'Brutus2' was backed up using an offline backup, therefore the VHD / VHDX files are only crash consistent. File-level recovery can be performed, but results may be unpredictable. Application-level recovery cannot be performed for this virtual machine.

If I backup the Exchange VM by selecting it directly, it completes successfully, or so it says.  Although it does not have the See Exceptions link at the top of the log by Successful, if I scroll down, it shows the following errors:

V-79-57344-65193 - The backup selection '\\Sunnie\Backup\BackupExec\IMG000031' was not successfully processed for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT). You will not be able to restore individual items for this backup selection

V-79-57344-65193 - The backup selection '\\Sunnie\Backup\BackupExec\IMG000032' was not successfully processed for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT). You will not be able to restore individual items for this backup selection

These are semi-explained here (meaning Symantec isn't sure what the deal is either):  http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH224170

My belief is that the Information Store/Exchange options should show up when I attempt the backup via the host machine, and if that were to happen, I would probably get a successful GRT backup of Exchange.  If anyone can shed any light on this that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Backups Failing with error "Directory not Found"

I need a solution

Hi All

We have the following set up in our network

1. Backup Exec 2014 server application is installed on a physical server which is running Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 Operating System

2. Dell TL4000 Robotic Tape Library is attached to the same  physical on which the Backup Exec 2014 running

3. Backup Exec 2014 has detected the robotic tape library and communication between the library and the BE 2014 is working fine

4. We use Hitachi HUS 110 storage system which is connected through the fiber channel to a VMware host, disk space has been assigned to individual virtual machines/servers from this storage

5. Regular backup is scheduled on some of the critical servers that are virtual machines and hosted on VMware ESX host servers

6. We have configured the backup schedule individually  fore each drives

7. It is observed that scheduled backup on all the drives starts off well and after backing up few Giga bytes, job fails with an error "Directory could not be found" although the directory is present and accessible

We are really furstrated with this backup failures and need a solution to get this resolved.

Appreciate if anyone can help us to resolve this issue.

Please let me know if you need any other details.

Thanks n regards

Hi all,

I use GRT to backup the SQL, Exchange and AD in our VMware (5.1) enviroment. All the servers has an Remote Agent installed. The backup went without

errors:

BE-GRT02.jpg

But when I try to restore an Exchange item (in this case serveral email items). I can't select Exchange:BE-GRT.jpg

Strange thing, I checked Exchange Database and notice that the database is backuped:BE-GRT03.jpg

How can I restore with GRT?
