Backup jobs summary report, kB - or KB (aka KiB) ?

I need a solution

Apologies for the basic question - re: the figure of 'TotalDataSizeKBytes' in the Backup Exec jobs summary report... is this number in units of 1000 bytes, or units of 1024 bytes?

I ask, because I've just checked in NetBackup, and the figure in the NetBackup activity monitor screen for size of backup jobs is KB (i.e. units of 1024), as defined here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibibyte

I ask, because in sizing calculations we usually work with GB and TB figures - which themselves are all based on 'kB' (i.e. units of 1000)...

...which means that if I divide NetBackup's 'KB' figure by 1000 to achieve MB etc,... then the resultant figure for MB is actually around 2.344% smaller than the 'kB / 1000' figure.

I'm wondering if the same is true for Backup Exec's  'TotalDataSizeKBytes' figure?

Thanks. D.

BE2010 R3 compatibility with VMWare ESXi5.5u2

I need a solution

Hi all, does anyone know if there are ompatibility issues with the above 2 products?

Previously had 3 hosts running ESX5.0 and a media server running BE2010R3 with the VMWare Agent installed and all my VM's were backing up fine no problems.

Recently upgraded my hosts to ESX5.5u2 and now my backups have stopped working, referencing an error similar to 'the vCenter Server reported an error with the virtual machines configuration.'

Can anyone advise if these two products should work and are compatible or does my BE installation need upgrading to 2012 SP3? and if so are there plans to release updates to make 2010 compatible with ESX5.5?

Thanks.

I need a solution

Hi,

When we try to restore file on the backup server, we cannot view any backup set on the restore wizard, although the backup was successful. The Symantec Backup Exec 2012 SP4 was install on the Server 2012 Standard. In the past we can restore the file.

Below is our backup configuration:

- Here are 8 tape inside the tape library, everyday will backup to the corresponding tape, for example: Monday backup to tape 001, Tuesday backup to tape 002 ....

Backup Exec always deletes expired disk backup datasets, even when there is free space available

My question is why Backup Exec always deletes expired disk backup datasets, even when it's not necessary because there is free space available on the same disk? I wanted to have as many copies as possible and this behavior prevents it. I am using Backup Exec 2012 version 14.0 Rev.1798 (64-bit) Thanks for your help

BE2014 - tape library showing empty slot after media expires

I need a solution

We're running BE2014 SP1 on Server 2008 R2, Dell tape library, using Microsoft "Unknown Medium Changer" driver and Symantec IBM ULTRIUM-TD3 driver.

Upgraded from BE2012 a few weeks ago, we did not have the issue under 2012.

We run a full backup of multiple servers to a robotic library partition with 4 slots on weekends.  Each weekend one of the tapes is deleted & retired before the backup goes to use it, and the slot shows "empty" until an Inventory is run.  After the inventory, the backup can use the tape.

The Audit Log shows the DLM action -

10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       BESSER\services                Device and Media          Media : A00104 has been moved from media set Scratch Media to media set Retired Media.
10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       BESSER\services                Device and Media          Media : A00104 has been deleted.
10/11/2014 6:11:54 AM       Data Lifecycle Management      Backup Set Retention      Deleted expired media: A00104,17691D7B-C7C3-4F1E-8BEA-C344CD4A11D5,,0

The media set overwrite protection is set to 1 week.

Any way around this issue?

Thanks!

BE 2014 & name resolution issues

I need a solution

I recently upgraded our BE 3600 appliance to 2014 SP1. I am having issues getting it to talk to all of my Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts. It acts like it's a name resolution issue, but I am able to ping the servers by name from the Backup Exec server. I am able to successfully connect to the servers in Backup Exec using their ip addresses.

What's puzzling is I have six Hyper-V hosts, all on the same subnet and configured the same. Backup Exec can talk to two of those by name. It needs the ip address for the other four.

The agent is installed and running on all of these servers.

If I try to remove one of these servers from Backup Exec (since it lets me add it to my list even though it cannot talk to it), I get errors such as ""Communication with the server timed out on the call 'DeleteResourceContainer'."

Any ideas?

BE 2014 Hangs on Snapshot

I need a solution

Hello everyone,

In advance, I checked the forums, but couldn't find a solution to the problem I seem to be having. Either that, or my google-fu is really bad today.

Anyways, we have a 2008 server that is running BE 2014 that was upgraded from an older version (2010, I believe). When we did the upgrade, everything went perfectly, but now the jobs just start to backup, get the information and then sit on "Snapshot Processing" and it will sit there for days on end till I have to cancel it, which also takes what seems to be a couple years.

Is there a way to fix or diagnose what the issue is exactly? Or has this already been answered and you know what's going on? I'm currently having to resort to another backup solution in the mean time to get the servers backed up as much as possible.

Thanks!

(If this is in the wrong place, I apologize. Moderators, can you please move this to the correct forum if it happens to be in the wrong spot? Thanks)

new cleaning tape - Backup Exec still thinks it's the old tape

I need a solution

My old cleaning tape expired. I removed it and inserted a new cleaning tape. Backup Exec seems to think the old tape is still in the slot. It still shows the old allocated date (March), still shows it's been used 50 times, etc. If I try to run a cleaning job it says "job failed with error: expired cleaning media."

1) I've tried to scan the slot, but that doesn't work.

2) I've seen advice saying "mark the slot as NOT cleaning media and run an inventory." However, when I mark it as not cleaning media, the option to inventory is still greyed out.

Any suggestions?

Yet another backup to tape speed issue

Dell Power Edge 1950 /server 2008 /20 gigs of ram /Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE With 1 port to san, 1 to Catalyst 4500 L3 switch /dedicated server for backup exec 2014. Used to be our old mailbox server.

Tape drive is a Quantum superloader 3 connected by SAS2

Equalogic PS4100X in raid 50 with dual switches for the storage network

Drive settings on the drive are currently:

  1. Hardware compression: Enabled
  2. Block size: 256KB
  3. Buffer size: 1MB
  4. Buffer count: 20
  5. High water count: 0
  6. Read single block mode: Disabled
  7. Write single block mode: Enabled
  8. Read SCSI pass-through mode: Disabled
  9. Write SCSI pass-through mode: Enabled

Currently Just the backup of our FP server is 3.4TB and currently takes 27 hours to complete on a full backup. Job Rate is 2,449 which roughly gives me a 41 MB/s transfer rate which unfortunately is below the minimum stream speed for the tape drive so the tape drive is going idle quite a bit which is probably the major cause of the jobs taking so long.

Current job is a cluster job backing up the HA vm's current file is a 1.3TB VHD that has been running for a number of hours.

Basically I am trying to figure out what I can do to speed this up. We Purchased the ADBO a few years ago but from what I have read lately it seems that offhost backup is fairly useless with virtual machines? And even then, would it make much of a difference with only one gigabit lead to the san.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

BE2014 SP1 - anyone having CASO & MMS server issues where DeDupe Storage is involved

I need a solution

Last Thursday night was our last successfully incremental backup.

Daily Incremental and Weekly Full (Monthly Write last Full to Tape)

Last Friday I made the mistake of upgrading to the new SP1 and have not been able to backup correctly since.

Our basic model is to Backup all jobs to the De-Dupe Store on the MMS (24 TB RAW Space @ 60 % used) and the Optimized De-Duplicate this backup Set to a off-site De-Dupe Store (24 TB RAW Space @ 53 % used)  Both Servers have 32 GB RAM.

The Two Servers are Brand New DELL R720XD Server with on board disk.  They were freshly bought 6 months ago to have a clean Windows 2012 R2 Server build with a clean install of BE2014.

We push around 9 TB of data to these De-Dupe Devices during the Weekly Full backups.

Most Agent based backups seem to work, they write to the De-Dupe store on the MMS but the Optimized Duplicate to the Off site BE2014 Server the job goes to "Active: Queued".

Two of the 9 VMWare Agent AVVI GRT seem to backups run through OK until it need to duplicate the set to the off site De-Dupe store it  goes to Active:Queued no Job Rate and byte count.  The Rest sit at Active : Queued for days....

Call is logged with Symantec since Monday and other than shunting me from one team to the other and then promising to escalate it to next level just today have not been any help at all.

Is there a bug or have I broken the installation during the Patching process - can anyone offer any advise or run into this type of behavior?

Thanks to anyone that can offer anything, it will be 6 Days since we have done a backup.

Thanks in advance

Stuart

Windows XP as a VM on a Hyper-V host failing on GRT?

$

I need a solution

So I have a pretty straight forward setup. I have a single 2008 R2 server running Hyper-V that runs Backup Exec on the same server. It's backing up the entire server including 6 VMs that include 4 2008 R2 VMs (1 exchange, 1 sql, 1 sharepoint and 1 application server), 1 2003 server (legacy Sharepoint), and one windows XP (legacy reports server with no new data, but has to be running when users need to pull old data) to tape. They all backup fine except the windows XP vm. It's fully patched running SP3. I've reinstalled the Agent for Windows as well as the Hyper-V Integration Services, and I still get this error for backup:

Backup- VRTSRV::\\SERVERNAME\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\CardSourceV-79-57344-38732 - Virtual machine 'CardSource' does not meet the requirements necessary for Backup Exec to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup.
V-79-57344-38769 - Virtual machine 'CardSource' was backed up using an offline backup, therefore the VHD / VHDX files are only crash consistent. File-level recovery can be performed, but results may be unpredictable. Application-level recovery cannot be performed for this virtual machine.

I did notice that when I look at the integration services in Device Manager, it shows the Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy system device, but it states (not supported) next to it and there is no services for it:

cardsource.png

Since it's going to tape, I'd just like to run a single job and have it be successful without exception. And since it's legacy data, I really only need it to be restorable as a full VM as we don't ahve the software anymore and can't install it on a new server and move the data.

I've read that Windows 2000 wasn't supported for GRT, but I thought XP was supported. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

As the title says I am planning to install BE2014 on either Win2012R2 or Win2008R2 and use deduplication storage.

Can you please share your findings if you use one or the other OS and what the pro and cons you have found?

I am currently on a BE2012 on WIn2008R2 and need to migrate to a newer environment soon.

I am more interested in the dedup and its behaviour....if any problems at all.....

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Catalog of tapes multitude of errors

$

I need a solution

I am using B.Exec 2010 on Server 2008

General Problem

My plight is that when I catalog tapes (this version and other versions of B.Exec), invariably I get an error. This is regardless of whether the tape is from current media server or another, current LTO level or different, lengthy catalog or short operation.

But since I have usually been able to work thru the error presented by essentially ignoring it, I usually can move forward. Probably irrelevant, but the types of errors that seem to be rampant are:

- The requested media is not listed in the media index

- Invalid physical volume Library media identifier

- An inconsistency was encountered on the storage media

- An error occurred retrieving catalog information etc, etc, etc

After attempting the numerous and time consuming fixes, I discovered that i would act is if the catalog was successful and then see what data was restorable. And as it turned out, the data was for the most part available as a restore job from that particular tape......until now.

Specific Problem

When I run this particular catalog job...although I deselect "Request all media in the sequence for catalog operations",  it asks for numerous other tapes. Fortunateley I have them all. But the issue here is that the job fails about 4 hours in with an error of:

0xe0000904 - An error occurred while retrieving catalog information

And although the other catalog operations of the other tapes in this set errored out (with different errors), when I got do a "restore" job, the other tapes are available to 'Restore". This particular tape is not however.

The tape drive is clean.

I have tried the fix as seen in:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH140538

Signed....bummed but hopeful!

How to do point in time recovery with SQL Server database?

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

I am evaluating Symantec Backup Exec 2014. I have a full database backup on Friday, a differential backup on every week day and transaction log backup on every two hours. I need to do point in time recovery. I know I need to restore the full backup, the last differential backup and every transaction log backups since the last differential backup and specify what time I want transaction log to be recovered to.  I am not quite sure what do I need to do with Backup Exec 2014. If I select the “to a point in time in the transaction log up to and including the specified time”, does Backup Exec automatic restore the full backup, the last differential backup and transaction log backups which were taken after last differential backup? What is the correct way to do point in time recovery with full, differential and transaction log backups? Thank you.

Backup Exec 2014 - Backuping MS SQL with Full Recovery Model & Log Shipping

$

I need a solution

Hi.

I got a MS SQL Database with a Full recovery model. We also implement log shipping to an off site.

Been testing BE 2014 & agent for application & database.

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Question

1. As I understand for MS SQL Database we can have either a Full, Differential or Full-Copy Backup.

1.1 Does the Full backup truncate and backup  the MS SQL Logs ?

1.2 Does the Differential truncate and backup the MS SQL Logs ?

1.3 Does the Full-copy  truncate and backup the MS SQL Logs ?

2. As I understand the Full-Copy backup does not affect other backup jobs. For our Database we initially plan just to do a Full-Copy, so we can use the built in MS SQL backup  running independently for period of time.

2.1 Can I implement a  Full-Copy backup via Backup Exec 2014 and run a seperate backup using th Built in MS SQL backup (at a different schedule) using MS SQL Studio?

---> I get a lot of feedback that this is not the best practice. However, we just need to use this for a time being.

3. Can I still implement log shipping even using Backup Exec 2014 to backup my MS SQL Database and logs?

3.1 Will backup exec affect or mess up my log shipping?

3.2 Would it be possible to do a full-copy backup and still implement log shipping without changing anything on my database.

3.3 I would want my log shipping to be automatic without any manual interventions, How should I setup my backups for MS SQL?

Thanks,

Paul
