Error "S_TF_NO_TAPE_PRESENT" when backing up to HP StoreOnce Catalyst

Hello,

we first had an error "0xe00084ec - A backup storage read/write error has occurred" when backing up to HP StoreOnce Catalyst.
After that we did a Software Update for the StoreOnce VSA and have seen that disk space was low.
We manually deleted some old backup sets in Backup Exec and the Housekeeping funktion of StoreOnce cleaned the files.

But now when backing up we receive the error in subject "0x2000040d - S_TF_NO_TAPE_PRESENT"

Does anybody know how to resolve this?

We are using Backup Exec 2012 SP4, Windows Server 2008 R2

StoreOnce is a StoreOnce VSA with software version 3.11.4

OST Plugin Version is 2.0.1

Backup Exec 2014 backing a Deduplicated Windows 2012 volume.

Hello,

 

Recently I moved my fileserver to a deduplicated windows 2012 volume to save disk space.

 

At the beginning (before win started to deduplicate) the backup was successful but one day the fullbackup started to fail saying that it is unable to found files and directories (I suppose it's because of the dedup) although the differential backups are still doing fine so that weirds me out even more. There is any good way to back the fileserver? Or i'll have to copy the content from the dedup volume to a normal one so be can backup the files? Because if that is the only option makes no sense to have a dedup volume if I have to duplicate the files in order to back them up.

Have a new windows 2012 R2 server and a new installation of backup exec 2014 (v14.1 rev 1786)

All is going well as far as domain servers goes, I've added those I need and done some test backup jobs - no problems.

Problem is servers not on the domain. Simply can't get BE2014 to connect to them. They are in my server list but status is "connection not established" and can't select them for a backup.

I've created logon accounts and tested connection through "manage logon accounts" but just get "fail".

There are 3 of these servers so far, all are getting backed up fine on our old 2010 system, I've tested the user accounts and password by logging directly on to the servers but no joy getting 2014 to communicate. Tried connecting by IP but same problem

Don't see anything in any logs to help diagnose the issue 

Any ideas appreciated

I need to restore a file from a tape that was used 6 months ago.  The retention period is only for one month.

Is there a way I can see what is on this tape so I can restore a file?

Licensing Exchange CAS and DAG

Hello,

There is a customer who has 2 physical Exchange CAS load balanced using NLB, and 2 physical Exchange Mailbox servers participating in a DAG. Using Backup Exec 2014, how many licenses are required for such setup? I read in the Backup Exec 2014 Licensing Guide that: "The Agent for Windows is required to be installed on each Exchange Client Access Server (CAS) in order to perform granular recovery. As this is a Backup Exec granular recovery technology specific requirement for Exchange we do not require the purchase of the Agent for Windows (AWS) for the CAS servers, just simply install AWS to each one ". Does this mean that only two Agent for Applications and Databases licenses are required (for the mailbox servers)? If so, does this entitles the customer to take a backup from those CAS servers, since they will have Agent for Windows Server installed?

Backup Exec hangs when expanding Server in selection list

I need a solution

I am trying to get the backup exec agent installed and working on a domain controller to back it up with Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP4. The Media server (we will call it Server1) and the remote server (we will call it Server2) are both running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and they both happen to be AD domain controllers. Server2 used to be a Backup Exec 2010 R3 media server, but I have uninstalled the software (using Control Panel > Uninstall a Program). After uninstalling it, I pushed the RAWS agent from Server1 to Server2 using the server name (we will say that is Server2.DOMAIN.COM). The install is successful and the service is running. On Server1, the new Server2 entry shows up in my selection list under favorites, but any interaction with it will lock up the Backup Exec program no matter how long I wait. After 15 seconds or so, an error is generated in Server1's Event Log under Application. The Error is: Event ID 1002 "Application Hang" -

This error is generated every time I try to expand Server2 in the selection list.

Things I have already checked:
I have already checked for the trusted relationship entry in Server2's Agent Utility. It is present and appears correct.
I have also turned off the firewalls on both servers to rule those out. Both servers are on the same subnet, same switch even. Server1's IP is 192.168.1.52, Server2's IP is 192.168.1.51.
I also verified DNS is resolving correctly between the servers. I even put the IP of Server2 in Server1's HOSTS file to be sure.
I did reboot the servers after uninstalling BE2010 on Server2 as well as another reboot after installing the RAWS agent.

After some research, it seems useful to have SGMON output to see where the breakdown in communication is. Here is the output I get from the Media Server, with all boxes checked in SGMON. The capture starts just before I click to expand Server2's selection list entry.

I have worked with Backup Exec alot and have never had this problem, even when dealing with these Server OS's and having BE2010 previously installed on a machine I want the agent setup on. 

 

 

disaster recovery plan for encrypted tapes

Hello

I am working on a server disaster recovery plan with tapes that are encrypted.  If my server went down and I have to rebuild it, or try and read the encrpyted backup tapes from another Symantec Backup Exec 2014 server, how would the encryption work for restoring?  Is the key on the tape and I would manually enter the password, or is there a way to backup an encryption code and restore to a server?

How to tell BE2010 to keep hands off tape library/ exclude a tape library from access

Hello BE community, dear Symantec support,

 

as described in the topic, I am trying to completely deactivate BE2010's access to a robotic library ("OVERLAND 0001") in my case. Each library has one LTO5 drive attached (actually it is one physical library partitioned within the library itself into two smaller ones with one exclusive drive for each partition; the library does show itself as two separat libraries in the device manager). I have BE2010R3 (Win Server 2008 R2) with the Library Expansion Option (LEO) option installed.

Since I do need one library ("OVERLAND 0001") for another software to access it from now on, I tried everything to deactivate that thing in BE2010. As You see, I deleted the library from "All devices", disabled the drive and the library (greyed out under "FDAS-SRV1"), re-installed the non-Symantec tape driver, dragged and dropped its tape drive into "Standalone Drives" in the window with focus (tapeinst.exe).

But so far I have no success. When starting the BE2010 services, I cannot access the tape library and its drive from within another software "scsi device already in use".

When completely disabling the services of BE2010, access from within other software works just fine.

So I ask hereby: How to restrict BE2010's access on tape libraries? I urgently need that 2nd library to be accessed from 3rd party software while BE2010 is running.

Trial Agent for Applications and Databases BE14

I need a solution

Hello all,

We upgraded from BE10 to BE14 and I am still getting used to the software since I have never used it before.  I noticed on the Home page that under Licensing and Maintenance Contracts that I have 9 trial licenses expiring in 45 days.  I found that the licenses are for the Agent for Applications and Databases.

We do have backups running on some servers that have SQL DBs but I do not see this agent running on those servers.  How can I determine the 9 servers that this trial is running on?

I have seen similar posts to my problem but still have not been able to get past this problem.

We had a drive fail, it has since been dismounted and deleted and new backup job created, but it seems this failed E: drive is still the Culprit.

Configure Backup Exec 2012 to Continue Even When Errors Occur

Running Backup Exec 2012 on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise platform.  Backing up a single file server running the BE agent, also with Server 2008 R2 Enterprise OS.  Would like to know how, if at all, I can get BE 2012 to continue backing up data even when it encounters errors during the backup.  I've used the "Enable Checkpoint Restart" option but it doesn't seem to work.  Or perhaps I'm interpreting this option as "keep backing up even if you run into problems where you can't back up something".  I am getting the "0xe000fe36 - Corrupt data encountered" which equates to entries like "directory not found" or "file not found" when in fact the referenced data is actually there.  Also using snapshot technology with the "automatically select snapshot technology" option.

Would greatly appreciate any information anyone can provide.

Question about LiveUpdate Information alert

I need a solution

We get the following LiveUpdate alert every day:  "You do not have the most recent updates for the Agent for Windows...".  When I follow the advice of the alert and sort the server list by Servers with Updates Available there is no servers appearing in the list.  However if I click back to the Default Configuration view and right-click on them the Update option does appear as if the server needs an update. 

Do the servers need to be updated?

Backup Exec failed jobs

I recently replaced my Dell PowerVault tape deck(would not accept tapes) with a new exact same model. Since the replacement I have been unable to get a backup job to complete. I have been getting the following codes in my event veiwer 34113, 57665, and 33152. I have tried everything I can think of to include restarting the services to new tape. The only thing that I can find that I can see as a probable issue is under the devices tap when you click on the all devices drop down and highlight the tape deck the media shows up to the side with a crossed out symbol. Any help would be appriciated.

Hello again,

I have the following scenerio:

We have tapes labeled IQ0000 - IQ0029 (30 tapes).

The data on the tapes will be kept for 365 days and have an append period of 2 weeks before we take them out and send them off site.

The issue I am running into is that the backup jobs are just using any tape it wants instead of going in order....maybe I am just being a bit OCD.  I know you can create media sets and associate jobs with the media sets.  However, say I create media set 1 (Tape IQ0000) and add it to all my jobs that run during the two weeks.  When the two weeks are over do I need to go in and point all the jobs to media set 2 (Tape IQ0001) or will the jobs just go down the media sets in order?

Hopefully that makes sense or there is another way to go about it.

Client-side dedupliction failed

Hi guys,

 

I need some assistance with an error I'm getting on some jobs on two Servers out of the 12 we back up. Those two are reporting the following:

 

The job completed successfully.  However, the following conditions were encountered:

Client-side deduplication is enabled for this job, but it could not be used. 

 

I am using Backup Exec 2012 and have installed all available updates to the BES and the Server agents. Some of the jobs on those Servers complete successfully while some report the error above. One Server is an Exec Server, the other is vCenter Server.

I have tried:

 - Changed the client-side dedup option to server side, run a backup job and then changed back again

 - Go into STORAGE > DEDUP DISK > PROPERTIES > SERVERS THAT SAHRE THIS DEVICE > and the Servers are missing form the drop down list but then there are others that are missing from there and it still works. (I don't know how to get them listed there?)

 - Manually uninstalled and reinstalled the BE Agent on those Servers

 - Can't be a firewall issue as some jobs on one Server are working ok

 - Can ping Sevrers by name and IP

 - Reviewed this link but lists old BE editions and fixes: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...
