Password protected tapes.

Ok...next challenge.  I inserted an old tape full backup of my previous file server shares to inventory and catalog to test that I can indeed pull data from the old tapes and I got the following error "The password provided in the job properties does not match the password for this media."  We/I (inherited the old configuration) did not password protect the tapes unless it was automatcially applied by BEX10d when new tapes were added to the media set during preconfigured backup jobs ...configured by my predecessor.  I don't think so b/c i have worked with these tapes before to do restores and did not require to enter a password.  

I came across a users having the same error and they were referred to TECH194494.  Is the only work around?  If so, i'd need some clarification.  I don't understand in the solution how runnnig the commands from the BEMCLI circumvents the password prompt issue for the tape in BEX2012.  Can anyone explain the commands (eg. "enter password on the blank line" then "use the $pass variable in the catalog job"..get-bemedia B2D000031??).  "To catalog backup to disk media", B2D, does not seem to refer to Tape media or restore from tape media.

Hi all,

We have Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 to backup our data on a set of HP LTO-2 Ultrium 400GB Data Cartridge (C7972A) tapes, the problem is that the tape only backup 280gb instead of its full capacity 400gb, kindly what I am missing here?

BE2012 Duplicate to Tape stage not performing as desired

Hi there, here is another of the BE2012 strange behavior case (as i see it):

1) I have multiple servers/jobs with full backup configured daily evening having "keep data for - 1 week" & then a Duplicate to Tape Stage added with Source being "Most Recent Full backup" scheduled on the Last day of every Month (strange? yea..) after the full backup end time..

Now when the Duplicate to tape gets executed successfully i notice that it is taking not the Last Full backup but last 7 full backups (as keep data for 1 week is selected) which is consuming the storage on the tape device.. Can it be explained & solved for me???

2) Also some jobs are configured as Weekly Full backups and keeping data for 4 weeks. Duplicate to tape stage set with Source as "All Backups" scheduled time set after the end time of the weekly full job..

This gets executed and duplicates only the Last Full Weekly backup (and not All Backups).. Not as expected again..

 

Please let me know if this is a bug or am i doing something wrong?

Duplicate jobs not duplicating full jobs correctly.

I need a solution

We have our jobs configured as follows:

1.  Daily differential backups to local disk with a 5 day retention

2.  Weekly full backups to local disk with an 8 week retention

3.  Monthly duplicate jobs to external USB disk with 1 year retention.  The final duplicate job of the year, I select to retain all backups on the external storage.

Configured for backup is file store and system state.  As I understand it, system state backups can only do full backups, so during the differentials, the system state backups run as full.  

The problem is that the duplicate jobs are configured to duplicate the last full backup.  Since the last full backup is technically the system state backup run during the differential, that is the only thing that gets duplicated.

I am considering changing the duplicate source to be Full backups rather than last full backup, but I'm concerned that ALL full backups for this server will be duplicated to the external drive, which could potentially be 8 full backups since our retention is 8 weeks, plus all the system state backups in the differentials and fulls that haven't expired yet.

wir erhalten beim Sichern von GRT Objekten sporadisch das Problem, dass die Sicherung plötzlich nicht mehr läuft. Die Meldung hierzu lautet:

V-79-57344-33899 - Die Ressource konnte nicht gesichert werden, da beim Herstellen der Verbindung mit dem 
Agent for Windows ein Fehler aufgetreten ist. Auf dem Zielcomputer muss die richtige Version des Agent for 
Windows ausgeführt werden.

 

Das Eventlog meldet hierzu:

Das Problem besteht solange, bis der gesamte zu sichernde Server neu gestartet wird. Ein reiner Diensteneustart behebt das Problem nicht. Wir konnten das Problem jetzt auf mehreren Geräten mit unterschiedlichen GRT Objekten (ADS, Exchange) feststellen.

Die VSS Writers auf den Zielsystem melden keine Fehler

Der Backup-Exec Remote Agent ist aktuelle und läuft auch durchgängig (stürzt nicht ab)

Jemand eine Idee?

Backup Exec 2010 R3 B2D folder keeps showing as offline

Hi guys,

We have a customer with BE 2010 R3, fully patched, and the backups keep failing because the B2D device shows as offline, and this has been happening for ages. Started off on 2010 R2, and upgraded them to R3, in a hope that it would fix something, but the issue is still there.

I've had errors saying that the backup exec server service isn't responding.

The device which hosts the B2D folders is a buffalo terastation NAS box, and the device remains online throughout, and is pingable with no loss.

Any ideas what could be going on? Let me know if you need any further details.

Hi,

I have a Clean install of BE2012 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server, with a Dell ML6000 Library(2 LTO4 tape drives).

My company provided me with L5 barcodes and only LTO4 tapes/drives. After reading https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/setting-barcode-rules-be-2012 I tried the Remove-BEBarcodeRule and could not figure out how to remove the LTO5 rules and add L5 barcodesuffix to LTO4 mediatype.

Do I need to use the Remove command along with the BarcodeRuleGuid, or are there any other suggestions you might have on clearing out LTO4 and LTO5 rules so that I can recreate new rules?

Details box incorrect during duplicate to tape

Backing up a server to disk (full + differential) and one stage is duplicating to tape.   Got in this morning and tape needed to be overwritten (we normally erase it manually, but had forgotten.   I clicked ok, and then duplicate stage began.  I opened details and under SOURCE it listed the tape drive and under DESTINATION, it listed the server.  Um...?   This made no sense obviously.  Watched it for a few minutes, and then lost my nerve and cancelled it.   Checked the job definition, and it says duplicate to tape.   Should I report this as a bug?  Other users notice it?  BE 2012.

Flexible "Duplicate Jobs On Storage Device X To Tape" Backup Option For BackupExec 2012

Currently I have BackupExec 2012 backing up 5 servers to a NAS storage device on our network.  (NOT using de-dupe.)  Full backups are run weekly, and incrementals for 2 key servers are run daily.

Is there anyway to setup one job with instructions like: "Scoop up most recent FULL backups from each server from NAS.  Add each subsequent incremental.  Copy all to tape."

I understand that I can setup "duplicate to tape" stages for each individual backup, but this causes problems on a number of levels.  A basic one is that I'm essentially configuring the same thing 5 different times.  (Each server's config has specific info about how the full backup is made, but once that full backup (to NAS) is complete, the instructions about when to copy that full backup to secondary storage are not server-specific in my case.)  

Thanks for any pointers you can give me.  I'm using:  v14.0 Rev 1798 (64 bit)

BE 2010 R3 fails to backup Linux server

I need a solution

One of the servers I am backing up is a Linux server.  I created this backup job a long time ago and has been running great.  Problem started about 2 weeks ago. The backup job is configured to output it's job to tape.  I tried redirecting the job to a B2D folder with the same end result.  The error code I get is E000821.  Other backup jobs run just fine.  Looking at the job log, I can see that the server and target client get connected.  If I try creating a new backup job, the process hangs the BE apps when I browse the target server.  I tried stopping and restarting the BE agent with the same result.

How to configure biparam.ini for SAP

Hi all,

I'm using Backup Exec 2010 to perform backup of my SAP installation. The media server and the SAP server are separated.

I got the things working (from SAP I can submit database job), but I can't configure parameters of the backup jobs properly. Because I didn't find the config file installed (biparam.ini), i googled that to search the options and checked the manual, but I can't figure how to set thing like backup method, priority and so on, because in the DBA-initiated job settings there are no those.

Also, I tried to create a policy with name "DEFAULT", but I can't see that in the job setup.

Can anyone help me please?

Failing to backup system state of DC

I need a solution

I created a new job to backup the system state of a DC.  I have the settings identical to another existing job that completes successfully (Advanced Open file, use GRT, etc).  It backups up to disk.  I kick off the job and anywhere between 7GB - 12GB, it fails with the following error:

V-79-57344-65301 - The System State resource is not responding.  Backup set canceled.

V-79-57344-65072 - An error occured while connecting to the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the media server.  Ensure that the job options are correct and then submit the job again.  The backup set was not created.

I also get the following exception:

The .DR file that is required for Intelligent Disaster Recovery is not updated

V-79-57344-34108 - An unexpected error occurred when cleaning up the snapshot volumes.  Confirm that all snapped volumes are correctly resynchronized with the original volumes.

 

I checked the articles.  The VSS services are set to manual.  I even rebooted the server to no avail.  Any ideas?

Hi!

We need to restore the backup which was taken by BE 2010. Now we have BE 2012. We imported the folder and catalog but how to restore it. Do we have to move it under the configured storage?

What is the proper way to restore it?

BE 12.5 - Services fail after a reboot

I need a solution

Hi,

I am facing an odd problem after a reboot of my Win2003 server. Once a week, the server reboots for maintenance reasons. Sometimes, it loses power because it's a mining company down the forest so the power can be an issue. Once this happens, the server reboots by itself but the BE services won't. Especially Job Engine and the Device & Media services. I can start them manually just fine. Sometimes, I have to enter the password again in the logon as service fields.

In the eventvwr, i can't see two errors after a reboot. Both ID 33808 saying this:

 

Une erreur s'est produite lors du traitement d'une commande B2D.
 Changer: SetUpProperties() GetDiskFreeSpace failed (G:\VERITAS\B2D\).  Error=3 
 
The other one says:
 
 Changer: MoveMedium() Attempt to Lock Slot Failed (G:\VERITAS\B2D\Folder.lck).  Error=3 
 
I'm not sure if it's related to B2D directly because he is probably not able to see it because of the Device & Media service not started. When all services run fine, my backups are taken either on tape or NAS.
 
I have seen on another thread that it might resolve by putting the service on Automatic (Delayed) but unfortunatly, i'm not on SBS or 2008 so, no option available for that. I'm wondering if I could do a little script that would restart the services after a complete reboot but i'm not a pro in this department.
 
If anybody can shed some light on this, i would be grateful.enlightened

BE2012 Job Cancellation on an unresponsive server

It seems that BE2012 doesn't like me manually cancelling jobs on unresponsive servers.  I had a server go dark last night, although heartbeat-type information was still coming from the server almost making it appear to be awake (my health monitors noted an issue, but it was not in a critical state).  The backup job was queued to run (still is, cause it won't cancel) for about 10 hours now and it is holding up other backups.  When I manually go to cancel the job, it just won't cancel.  No error, nothing is returned.

Now, the server is back up and fully responsive, but the job is stuck in queue and still will not cancel.

My guess is that in order for a job to be manually cancelled, BE2012 needs a response from the agent on the server for which the job is being cancelled.  This seems a bit short-sighted on the spec design...I should be able to cancel a job regardless of response from the agent.

The job did finally end up cancelling by the time I got to this line, because it finally got ahold of the agent.

It would be nice to have this reviewed and addressed if possible.

List of Remote Agents needed to be updated

I need a solution

Hi,

Somehow today I saw a menu in Backup Exec 2010 R3 where the updates for the Remote Agents were displayed and a list which told me how many agents needed updates. Now I can't find this anymore. It's driving me crazy cause I read it on a forum but can't find it anymore.

Anyone knows what menu or option I mean and know how to find it? I don't mean the Tools > Install Agents and Media Servers on Other Server. I really saw a list of agents who needed to be updated.

Restoring Exchange 2010 with Backup Exec 2012

I have a easy question, and thanks everyone for the help.

 

So i backed up an Exchange Server and now i want just restore two mails from an inbox, i do the restore job as always but the moment that the restore is working it fails with "NO SPACE LEFT" message.

 

 

So the Question goes like this:

How can i solve the issue with te restore of the database? or the correct procedure to make the restore if my Backup Server have limited disk space.

 

 

Backup of the EXCHANGE SERVER: 500gb

Available space on the Backup Server:  110gb
