Backup Exec 2012 interface just horrible

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi all,

being forced to leave BE 2010 R3 due to the need to backup Exchange 2013 IS, i have migrated to BE 2012.

Ive been using BE since version 8 and always loved it. However when it comes to BE 2012 i have only one question to ask  -

Who at Symantec responsible for this monstrosity called the user interface??  Who ever made the consious decision to leave the old, simple and solid GUI to go to this " new and improved " version should never be allowed to develop software again and possibly face criminal charges. Utterly horrible no matter what way you try to set the view settings. Better yet, WHY did the interface have to change so much?? What was so wrong with the tried and tested interface and stupid simple setup for backp and restore in all the previous versions??

Glad this is only a 60 day trial and i didnt make the mistake of wasting money on this... time to move to something like ShadowProtect or NOVAstor..

How to Restore Exchange Mailbox from Older Backup Version

I need a solution

I have installed Backup Exec 2012.  We have been using this for a couple of months now.  All my backups are done through this.

I have a request from upper management to retrieve a mailbox from our April 2013 end of month tape.  It was backed up using Backup Exec 12.

I have loaded it and inventoried and cataloged.  How do I get it to recognize the data off that tape.  The server is still the same server from the backup.

also, I backup to disk before tape.  I did "Duplicate" the Exchange store that I want to a "Disk Storage 0001" area thinking I could do a search and find it that way.  So far no luck.

Help..

Thanks once again

BE2012 SP2 deployment

Just to confirm that the latest release of Backup Exec 2012 SP2 did not support Windows Server 2012 as the media server ? Is there any timeline for the release of BE that will support Win 2012 svr as the media server. In order to backup Windows 2012 server , Exchange 2013, I need to installed BE 2012 on a Windows 2008 as the media server and just install Agent for Windows on the Windows 2012 server and Exchange 2013. Is this the supported BE 2012 deployment at the moment ?

Thanks in advance.

This might sound like an odd place for this, but I'm trying to open a ticket online for Backup Exec. The problem is that when I try to choose the account for this product at the screen "Please select the account for your case.", it deselects my account every time I hit "Next".

Is there something wrong with the website?

I need a solution

Hi backup people

I got lost in the license jungle.

I have a Backup Exec 2012 server with a tape library and backup disks mounted locally.

Now I need some more backup disk storage and I have another Windows server with storage that I want to present to the BE server and use it for backup to disk.

Do I need any additional licences for this configuration ?

Cheers

Getting 0xe0009582 - Cannot get the disk changed information on AVVI backups

I need a solution

I recently upgraded my BE 2012 to SP2.  A few weeks later we upgrade to VMware 5.1.  I've noticed number of virtual server (AVVI) jobs fail with the "Cannot get the disk changed information..." error message.

I thought that maybe CBT was not being read from VMware as these are differential backups, but simply re-running the job works fine.  I don't see anything in VMware that there was a problem for the server in it's tasks and events log.

Little is logged in the event viewers on the BE media server.  Only thing is that there are more backups running at once at night - potentially 12 backups at once across 3 Data Domain appliances.  Maybe I could pull that back a bit?

Any ideas?  I'll probably open a case, but forums are sometimes faster for these "low severity" things.

Thanks,

-Dave

When I try to establish a trust or schedule a backup for a Windows 2012 Core Installation Domain Controller I get this error:

Failed to browse...

Failed to log on to Microsoft Windows.

Ensure that your logon credentials are entered and that they meet the following minimum requirements to log on to a Windows computer:

-The credentials used are a member of the Backup Operators group.

-For Windows Vista/2008 and later, the credentials hav ethe Log on as a batch job privilege.

Additional privileges may be required to access resources on the Windows computer.

I am running Backup Exec 2012 with Service Pack 2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Std 64bit

My BE service account is

  • A Domain Admin
  • In the Backup Operators security group
  • In the Exchange Organization Administrators security group
  • Set explicitly as local admin, run as batch, and run as service
  • Is NOT in the Domain Users group

I am backing up Windows 2003, 2008, and 2012 platforms successfully with this service account.

I am also backing up Windows 2012 Core File Server installations successfully with this service account.

There are 4 DCs running Core Installations that have this issue:

  • When adding the DCs to BE it connected and installed with no issues.
  • The services are present and running on the DCs.
  • There are no event logs on the DCs or the BE Server referencing these attempts.
  • Remote Desktop is enabled
  • Firewall is turned off
  • These attempts do not lock out the account

All responses are greatly appreciated :)

Overwrite issue within same job on USB Flash Drive

$

I need a solution

I have USB Flash/Thumb drives for a 5-day rotation. The devices are initialised as Disk Cartridges with Media type: FLDR. They are automatically put into the media set "Backup Exec and Winodws NT Backup Media" with "Infinite - Do not overwrite" protection. They CANNOT be moved from this group - apparently this is by design in Backup Exec 2012 SP2. The Maximum file size to be just under the formatted size of the USB thumb drives. The USB thumb drives are in a storage pool called "USB Disk Pool".

I have set up a job with a recurrence each week day. Storage is the "USB Disk Pool" with a custom media set. "Eject the media after the job completes" is enabled.

If I don't set the global Configuration and Settings, Backup Exec Settings, Storage, Media overwrite protection level to NONE (don't prompt), the jobs won't write to the USB drive without first prompting (which is obvious useless in an automated backup).

These settings work with a single backup set within a backup job. However, if I wish to backup multiple drives it automatically overwrites the previous task (within the same backup job step) which is very strange behaviour. I can't think of a scenario where this would actually be useful...

So, if I wish to backup say folders on Drive E it works. But if I want to backup folders on Drive E and G and System State, the backup set for G overwrites the backup set for E which has just completed (within the same backup step).

How do I backup multiple locations (on the same server) without 1 overwriting another within the same job?

Hi everyone

We are using backup exec 2012 for trial. We are trying to use removable usb drive to backup data daily. Our backup model is to overwrite data daily and hence we dont need historical records. However, i am unable to get backup exec to overwrite data on the tape. It keeps saying out of space even though ive set retention to 1 hour

Ive read that backup exec does not overwrite the latest backup set. is this true?

thanks in advance

Restoring SQL databases

How would I be able to restore my database along with the transcation log if somehow it got corrupted? Like I have mention before I am running two types of job, Full and Differental backup.

By adding the incremental transcation log backup would that created a two step process to  restore a database to the point of failure? If you can could provide in depth detail with on how this is actually done?

In addition, I have not have the need to restored a SQL database before, but I would like to know the process of doing so involving an incremental transaction log backup.

2 backup jobs with same selection list but one fails all the time - backup exec 2010 R3

I need a solution

I wonder if anyone here can help me.

One of my clients is running backup exec 2010 R3 on one of their servers. They have 2 backup jobs scheduled (1 to an internal drive that is run everyday and the other to an external USB hard disk every second day) but for the past month the internal has failed. They both have the same selection list, settings, have AOFO set to use 'Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider' but still the internals fail. The external backup has no issue and has been running fine for the passed month. The old technician at my company (he was the primary tech for this client) could't even get one of the jobs to run. I'd feel happier if both jobs could run fine.

The OS on the server is Windows 2008 R2 Standard (sp1) and Backup Exec 2010 R3 (i'm not sure about the update's as this server is behind a firewall that blocks all incoming and outging internet traffic, only the mail server and directors of the company has full internet access.

BE2012 SDR Backup Job and Win2k8R2 DC Issues

I need a solution

Has anyone experienced issues with BE2012 and an SDR job on a win2k8 domain controller?

We have been racking our brains for over 3 weeks; and the only solution that has stuck was holding the job.

The issue was that the computers/servers in the AD Site would not use the local DC.  This would cause authetication timeouts for Exchange and other resources.

MS was called in and analyzed our environment extensively but could not find an issue with our AD.

We did notice the issue would occur AFTER a SDR backup would finish; and the issue was resolved 20 minutes after we would reboot the DC.  Interestingly the other DC in the environment was not helping or hindering.

Trying to restore data from a replicated Quantum DXi VTL partition

I need a solution

Good afternoon,

I'm currently trialing BE 2010 R3 at a new datacenter, backing up the local servers at the datacenter is working fine however I am now trying to recover data from backups taken by Backup Exec 2010 Gold at our head office to a Quantum DXi 6701 VTL which is then replicated to the Quantum DXi 6701 at the data center.

I've recovered a partition on the datacenter DXi, mapped that partition to the datacenter backup server, inventoried and catalogued the cartridges, I'm now trying to recover some data as a test from the replicated partition but it's failing with e0008848 security access is denied.  The restore job is setup to redirect the restore to a local drive on the datacenter backup server and the account used to run the backup exec service has full admin rights on that server.

How do I find out what exactly backup exec is being denied access to ? is it the cartridge, the target server / directory?

Regards

I am just starting to google this some.   Would kind of like it if this error would explain this a little better like what file and why it is failed and not done with exceptions ??   This job was running for a couple hours then giving this error ..  We did a live update and found that SP2 for Backup Exec. 2012 was available .. So we applied that yesterday and ran it again .. It is a big job and ran from noon yesterday to almost 9 am this morning.  And was over 1tb then failed again with this same error ???   Any one know a quick log to check to see if I can fix this ?

I have looked at WIndows logs as per a Google article and found it telling me about a couple files that it did not like in a temp folder that were shortcuts that went no where.   I have deleted them.   But would like to be a little more sure I have fixed it.   I'm not to convinced these were the ones as they failed during the backup according to the windows logs yesterday afternoon around 6:30pm.

So anyway I can get better information about this error??

Thanks

Mike

I'm running out of disk space - how do I expire existing media?

I need a solution

I have an 11TB drive for our internal backups.  I have 6 days of storage space left.  Changing the Keep Until dates on the jobs doesn't seem to change the expiration date on the existing backup sets like changing expiration dates on media sets used to.

How do I propagate these changes across 11TB of data - it's a years worth of backups!!!!

I must say that BE 2012 has to be one of the most poorly designed pieces of software I've ever been forced to deal with....
