I need a solution

Is it possible with Backup Exec 2012 Sp2 to create a reoccurring redirected restore job of the most recent full backup of a VM?

My goal is to automate the restoring of a VM to a different Hyper-V host each time the VM is backed up.

parallel jobs to one Tape drive with backupexec 2012 R2

I need a solution

i want to boost the backupspeed to our new tape library with a  LTO-6 Drive (TANDBERG StorageLoader)

therefore backup jobs sould be able to be combined for writing to tape (4 jobs parallel to tape)

Now, jobs B2T are waiting for the next free slot, because only one job can be stored to the tape at one time.

Our earlier BackupSoftware arcserve could combine several write jobs to tape together (up to 4 or 8) ...

can BE2012 do this also??

I need a solution

Hello everybody.

i have 5 servers using BE 2010 R3 SP2, after upgrade SP3, two of that server need two tapes to complete a job, that with SP2 only need one tape.

The tape drive is a LTO 2, and the tapes are of 400 GB, the size of the Backup Job is 260/270 GB in one server and 330/340 GB in the other one.

i think that this SP3 make several changes that affect compress of the data, i dont know.

Somebody has been similar issues?

I´m thinking go back to SP2 in that servers.

Some Basic BE 2012 V-Ray Edition Configuration Questions

I need a solution

Hello,

I have a couple of basic questions about Backup Exec 2012, specifically the V-Ray edition.  I’m accustomed to BESR 2010, but find some of the BE 2012 terminology confusing.  I am considering a scenario where I would be backing up a single Hyper-V 2012 server with six to eight VMs.  I would like to use an existing QNAP NAS as my backup storage device.

I have the following questions:

1.)  What Symantec software gets installed where?  I.e., I assume a component is installed on the Hyper-V host (?)  Is there also an agent installed on each guest VM?

2.) The documentation makes reference to a Symantec Media Server License.  What is this?

3.) What are the limitations/options regarding backup storage devices?  The QNAP NAS works fine for BESR 2010 backups.  Can it be used for BE 2012 backups?

4.)  I’ve seen information that indicates this product is licensed per occupied socket on the target host server.  I’ve seen other information that suggests that licensing is also graded on the number of cores per socket.  Is the latter correct?

5.)  I assume there is an administrative console and that this console should/needs to be wholly independent of the target host server and that this workstation can run a Windows 7 class OS.  Is this correct?

Thank You

Error catagory other errors ..   Refer to link V-79-32772-8975

When I go to that link it shows a article about checking on the VSS providers.  This is BE 2012 and the service that article mentions is not in the services and when I run the command the only provider I have is the Windows one.

I see some basic job failed errors in the windows logs and a couple about VSS service errors.

I am fairly new with 2012 and this client is new for me.

This job has been fairlilng for a while with these errors.   Can it be as simple as taking away the auto part of the VSS and have it use Microsofts ?

Thanks in advance.

Included some pictures.

Well, when I run the environment check, I get the warning about needing to have Symantec Endpoint protection installed on the server.  I currently have McAfee AV and Mcafee HIPS running on the server.  Do I really need to uninstall McAfee AV and HIPS and install Symantec AV and Endpoint protection for Backup Exec 12.5 to work?

Still running on Windows 98 and cannot get a backup to complete, it stops after asking do I want to to append? I can hear the tape run for about 30 seconds then it stops and does nothing.

I need a solution

I'm attempting to run a newly created Active Directory back-to-disk job on Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP3 but getting this strange error:

Final error: 0xe0000f16 - The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media needed.

V-79-57344-33064 - Error - Mount failed.
No targeted devices were found that support the drive features selected by the job. The job has been canceled by Backup Exec.

Notes:

- In Devices and Media, device is set to a newly created backup-to-disk folder
- When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available
- Rebooted BE server
- Installed latest remote agent on domain controller
- Have a duplication job linked to a write to tape (I got the error prior to creating this dupe job)

Any ideas?

BE 2012 - Restoring From Old Server Tapes (LTO3)

$

I need a solution

I am currently having difficulties restoring the data from a previous server in production that used LTO3 tapes (fortunately that server is still up and running if I need it).

On my new server, I have successfully rebuilt the catalog database.  I did this by:

  • Copying the catalog data from the previous server to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalog
  • Stopping all Backup exec services
  • Running the catrebuildindex.exe
  • Starting all Backup Exec services and reopening program

The PROBLEM is that when I want to restore data, the current job just sits and displays "Ready; Invalid storage device"

I assuming that it is stating this because the associated tape needed for this restore is not in the library. My biggest frustration is that it is not prompting me for the tape that I needed to enter.  The previous Backup Exec version would prompt me with the Barcode\Media Label of the tape in the catalog database... BE 2012 does not.

Furthermore, I cannot Restore by tape, only by server.  Thus making it very difficult to determine which tape I need.

After going through all of this, it basically feels like rebuilding the catalog database was useless…

Does anyone have this same situation?  Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance.

I need a solution

Hi there,

I have BE2010 R3 and set up a few jobs, full and diff. The target is a UNC share that is always available. On that share I have created folders, for each job 1 folder. The target is a sata disk. The disk will be changed with another every monday. So full back-ups run in the weekend.

When I run the jobs manualy, they run fine. When leaving them scheduled, the fail.

Drive and media mount requested: 25-08-2013 01:00:00
V-79-57344-33039 - Error - Mount failed.
User canceled a Physical Volume Library operation.

The fulls and diffs have al the same media set, set to overwrite protection period 6 days and append period Infinite - Allow append.

The fulls and diffs are targeted to their own B2D on that drive, job set to Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available.

I did some searching and fount that the Append setting should be set to Overwrite.

I do not use a Device Pool since I have some enough articles that it also works like this setup.

So what is going wrong? For now I have them setup to Overwrite but do I need to set this up also with the Diff jobs? I don't wan't him to overwrite my diff every day. That should be kept for 1 week.

My goal is:

1. Run full jobs in the weekend and change the disk (UNC) every monday morning. It may ovewrite the old backup.

2. Run diff jobs every working day. Should overwrite after 1 week.

Is my setting wrong and if so, what should I change?

Thanks.

Backup Exec 12.5 licence/serial location

I need a solution

Hi All,

I've searched and read multiple threads regarding this but havn't quite gotten an answer to my issue.

I'm trying to audit our current licences against all our servers that are backedup by Backup Exec but I'm not having much success.

Scenario:

I understand that we require licences for certain backups.  Such as Remote Agent licence for SQL backup and RAW licence for flat files.

Currently we have a server which has Backup Exec 12.5 installed (licenced).  On this server we have setup jobs for additional 5 servers to backup flat files.

In this case we will require 5 extra RAW licences correct?  If this is the case, does each of the 5 servers store a licence/serial key which can be retrieved?  If in future I decommisioned 1 server how am I to retrieve the RAW licence so I can use it for a new Server?

Do we simply have to manage this at our decretion?  "If you backup 5 servers make sure you have 5 licences?"

Thanks.

Job rate is very slow 160MB\MIN on LTO5 HP library

I need a solution

Hello All,

We have Backup Exec 2010 R3 with all latest updates patched. The backups goes to disk and then duplicated to tape. The below is our configuration. We get a through put of 160MB\Min. I tried copying some file from DISK to another location to check the disk's through and they are decent enough 1100MB\MIN. Only duplicate backups to tapes are slow, 140GB data takes 17 hours to complete.

MASTER SERVER: BE 2010 R3

OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard

Library: DELL PowerVault 124-T LTO5

Throughput : 160MB\MIN (It used to be 1800MB\MIN 4 months back)

DRIVERS: Symantec Drivers

Troubleshooting:

-Tried rebooting the library (powercycle)

-Ran backups with different types of data (single file, small file, large file, single large database and all gave same througput)

- Rolled back and updated the drivers.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I need a solution

Hi,

I have newly configure a hyper-v failover cluster that build up with two host (win server 2012) and 5 vm (win server 2012). When I try to use the backup exec 2012 v-ray (win server 2008) to backup these vm inside csv. I getting error that related to vss. Below is the backup exec error code and event viewer error code:

Backup Exec Error Code:

- Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on :"VRTSRV::\\cluster_name\HYPER-V?HA?VM\vm_name". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

V-79-10000-11230 - VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot technology that you selected does not support snap technology for this volume. Select another snapshot technology, and then run the job again.

Event Viewer Error code in Hyper-V Host:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:
   Gathering Writer Data

Context:
   Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
   Writer Name: System Writer
   Writer Instance ID: {9c4082f1-950d-4df5-87b4-e67bf0f37754}

Does this issue related to the VSS or Symantec Backup Exec V-Ray unable to backup Hyper-V Cluster CSV volume?

Anyone know what's wrong for my setting? Thanks if you guys can help me on this issue.

BEMCLI Command to list VMware VM Jobs

I need a solution

I am trying to get some info out of BE using BEMCLI and with physical servers I can run:

Get-BEAgentServer -Name "Server" | Get-BEJob

And I get what I need.

However, when I try:

Get-BEAgentServer -Name "MY_VCetner_Server"

It returns null. So I assume that my VCenter server is not technically an "agent server" but then what is it? How do I get any info about it using BEMCLI? I have given this project too much time already all because I cannot seem to figure out how to get all jobs associated with my VCenter server.

The jobs do show up when I do Get-BEJob, but there isnothing in there about if the job is a VM Job or not. Am I mising something or is this just another place where BEMCLI just isn't complete?

Speeding up the Backup Exec Console (Not backup speeds)

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I have a six node cluster with Backup Exec installed on each with 12 SAN resources attached throughout. Data total is over 100 TB, roughly 200 TB worth of backups a week (1 full with 4 incrementals) and I have a primary SSO with almost 200 GB of data in the catalog, with well over 200,000 files..

Needless to say we are increasing our SAN is increasing quite a bit and I'm getting a lot more jobs with a lot more data.

I don't have BE clustered as the Admin guide says I am not neccessarily compatible. Personally I don't want to try it because I can't reboot these systems except once a month. Anyways, I have a few questions that I was unable to find in the forums, or anywhere else for that matter,  to help organize my jobs and/or speed up my console.

1 - Would clustering be prefered?

2 -  Can I set it up so one job utilizes more than one drive? Right now I have several jobs per server.

3 - Is there a way to set up a policy made job to have the job name or selection list name in the restore menu somewhere?

4 - When copying jobs is there a way, besides opening and saving the selection list, to not use the server being copied from?

#4 is odd, I found that it looks like BE "pipes" jobs through the server I created the job on when they are copied to another server.

ie copying selection list "E:\*.* SUBDIR" from server1 to server2

I would really appreciate the help, I am hitting my head against my desk trying to get this working.

One of my clinets wants to get an HTML report of the the files that were backup for a specific policy.(six month of daily incremantel backups)

Going into the Restore winodw, and select the latest date, i can see the entire folder tree that include all the files and folders (as we are using TIR)

Can i somhow export that folder tree view to HTML?

Thanks
