Hey folks,
we just upgraded to BE 2014 from 2010 and it's a world of difference. I am starting to get use to the new setup for configuring jobs (associate the job with the servers) but the media set is what's driving me crazy.
I created a B2D going to a NAS and I would like to associate that B2D folder with a media set I configued for full overwrite (no OPP or append)
I created the media set under "Storage" went to the details and then to the "Media" tab on the left but I can't see where to add my B2D folder to this media set. It just says "No Media"
I also can't set the OPP to 0 hrs like I used to be able to in the old 2010. I did turn off the "Media Overwrite Protection Level" but I can only set it to 1 hr.
thanks,
Ken
Hi all.
We have a Windows Server 2003 running backup Exec 2010 r3. We have some physical servers, Vmware machines and NetApp devices. Since two weeks ago, without do upgrades or programs installations, we are having errors in the backup jobs in the NetApp devices because a credentials error. When we try to do the job in that devices, we always have the following error:
Hacer copia de seguridad- ACACRSFP223Acceso denegado a Remote Agent. Compruebe la cuenta de conexión para ver el dispositivo especificado.
This error stars after a job error with Backup Exec, in the previus backup job:
Hacer copia de seguridad- \\ACACRSFP223\vol1Ha fallado el montaje del soporte.El usuario ha cancelado una operación de biblioteca de volúmenes físicos (PVL).V-79-57344-33861 - El usuario terminó la operación del soporte.
We are using domain administrators privileges and nobody change the password, so this is really annoying. We try to put again credentials, restart server, services, reinstall BackUp Exec and we install BackUp Exec 2012 and 2014 in other machine but we are having the same issue.
And all is very rare, cause in Backup Exec we can navigate in the tree directory of this device and see all folders to select the folders that we have to backup, but when the backup job start, we can't have access to them.
We tried other program and have the same issue when is in "service mode" but when do it as aplication can do the work without any problems. So... It can be a service problem?
And we read a lot of topics here and try many solutions but we couldn't it.
Somebody can help us?
Can I replace any tape cartridges of different kind (brand, file capacity) in the tape drive just that it have to be support by the tape drive (LTO-5)?
Regards,
Qingyan

Hello,
We are starting a project to replace an old Bue2010 R3 mediaserver with a new one. The new server will have a 10 gbe network connection.
The media server has a local Sql express database. We backup to datadomain wich has also a 10gbe network connection. We have Exchange, SQL, Enterprise Vault, Vmware ESXi, Sharepoint, Active directory and a lot of Virtual servers and some physical servers in our environment.
We consider three scenario's at the moment
Scenario One:
We will install a Backup Exec 2014 mediaserver with a local sql express database in a HyperV VM. Is it supported to install a Bue2014 mediaserver in a HyperV vm with windows server 2012R2 as OS?
We are thinking about buying two physical servers. We will install a Windows Server 2012R2 hyperV cluster on these servers. The mediaserver will we install in a VM. The plan is that the vm can fail over to the other HyperV server in case of a Physical server failure. We backup to disk (datadomain).
Scenario Two:
We will install a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2 and BUE 2014 as mediaserver on this server with a local sql express database.
We backup the physical server daily with Symantec System Recovery. We will restore the server with the system recovery image in case of a failure on another server with the same hardware. Is this backup and restore method supported with a bue 2014 mediaserver?
Scenario three:
We will install two physical servers with windows server 2012r2 and BUE 2014 in a failover cluster.
Our production SQL server has sql 2005 sp3 at the moment. Is it right that we have to upgrade to at least sql2005 sp4 for clustered database support?
Is it possible to migrate the local sql express database to a sql server cluster and use it as a shared Bue database?
I would like to know if these scenario's are supported. Thank you for your feedback
Hi
We are doing NDMP backups from a NetApp SAN, and we have a large user folder with 1500 folders in it.
When this backup job starts, it hangs at 1,024 bytes for sometimes up to 12 hours whilst it enumerates the folder structure.
We wish to split this job into smaller batches by backing up folders A-C under one job, D-F under another etc.
If I manually modify the selection list eg: /user/a*.* /subdir the backup fails.
Below is the Selection list details:
//san-name:10000/vol/vol-name/users/a* /subdir/
Could anyone help me get the syntax correct or even advise if what I am trying to do is possible?
I have tried multiple syntaxes, all of which result in a e0001309 - The NDMP server returned a backup error.
Thanks in advance.
Hello All ,
I'm using Backup Exec for years without a problem .. Recently my Backup Exec 2010 R3 , started to give me some troubles .. accessing some folder , which it used to access normally .. but it started to give error "Path not found" , or "access Denied" , i looked for every way to solve it and it didnt work ,
Eventually i created a seperate job for that path , and it was working .. but not the old job ..
anyway .. after abit or researching .. i found someone in the community suggesting to create a new Selection List .. I did .. and of course it created a new jobs completely .. anyway .. long story short ..i faced another issue ..
I have Daily Incremental Backup , and weekly full backup ... and the backup happen in two steps .. disk to disk , then dublication to tape ..
For Incremental no issues .. For the weekly it got canceled by timing out .. as my weekly backup takes around 50 Hours to complete .. it cancel the job after 8 Hours ..
I researched again in the forum and found this :
Disable the Option "Enable automatic cancellation for selection list" in Backup Exec under: Tools | Options | Priority and Availability or Backup Job Properties | Source | Priority and Availability.
I found the option was enabled .. so i disabled it .. i dont know why it was re-enabled .. i never faced this issue before .. anyway .. waited for the second week .. and it still happening .. the job is canceling after exactly eight hours .. i thought may be i need to restart the services .. and it didnt work .. then i though ok i'll reanble it and increase the AutoCancelation option to 100 Hours .. and it didnt work .. still exactly 8 hours and it cancel ..
The error is :
Job Completion Status Job ended: Friday, August 22, 2014 at 5:00:12 AM Completed status: Canceled, timed out The job was automatically canceled because it exceeded the job's maximum configured run time. Errors Click an error below to locate it in the job log Backup- D:V-79-57344-33861 - The media operation was terminated by the user.
The Job Schedule is as per the below photo ..
Can anyone help me with a solution pls ??
Our Windows server 2012 does not boot to desktop, freezes with black screen, can't boot server in console mode and only thing that boots is AD recovery. Windows own backup tool does not run in AD recovery mode, safe mode or recovery console. Is it possible to get system state backup with DNS, DHCP and AD using backup exec? We have not tried, but I'm looking at the options. Adapter with old firmware corrupted C partition so last backup did not succeed, therefore we do not have a working backup. At the moment we are building new server and are trying to minimize configuring time.
We have a large virtual environment and our Backup Exec server is a physical server. Symantec server is connected to our tape library via 8Gb fiber connection. Network is a flat 1Gb LAN.
We know the slow performance is not caused by the library or drives (LTO5) because the backup exec server can backup at 8 GB / min. I assume that is because it's going straight to the library via the fiber connection.
The next fastest server runs at 1.5GB / min to tape. That is acceptable performance but still seems kinda slow. The worst performers are backing up at 60MB / min, which is about as bad as it could get. That is slower than USB2.
I thought maybe it was a network transfer issue but all servers can copy data to the Backup Exec server much faster than the backup is going.
All servers are on the same network, same blade enclosure, same SAN storage. There is nothing different about any of them other than their backup speeds.
I've read all of the performance tuning documents but in our situation it's not all servers that are affected, only about 1/2 so we know that the environment is in good shape.
What else can we look at?
Hi all
I have a new W2K12R2 server with BackupExec 2014 and a RDX-100 system.
The problem plaguing me right now is that I cannot get BE to overwrite the disks at all. I have to manually erase the disks before the job starts otherwise the job craps out with 'Media xxxx is limited to read only operations in Backup Exec' I have changed, or rather emoved the 'Limit Backup Exec to read only operations' option in the BackupExec Settings with no effect, still have the same problem.
I have used been using BE 2010R3 and have never had a problem like this, is this a new 'feature' in BE? Is there any way to turn this feature off?
***Update
I have another W2K8R2 with BE 2014 and a RDX-100 system exhibiting the same behaviour.
Any help would be appreciated.
Tim
I have an XP Pro PC that has folder that has a very large number of subfolders.
I can backup other folder on the drive.
Backupexec crashes when backing up the folder with the large number of subfolders.
The same issue happens with NTbackup.
I am able to use the DIR command to display the subfolders from a command prompt.
ANy help would be great.
I have issues with Backup Exec 2014 (clean install) on windows 2012 64 bits std. We have a weekly full backup every week and after the recyclable tape come back from the vault, I can see the tape show overwriteable and appendable. The tape status Blue bar is 95% (overwritable 1.3TB), and 5% (2GB) remain appendable. I also check the overwritable media set in the tape are all expried.
On the backup exec setting -> storage _> Media overwrite protection level I have set to partial - protect only allocated media.
Issues I am facing is during the weekly backup start, backup exec will backup 2GB data to appendable space on the tape and mark the tape overwrite protected instead of reuse the overwritable space. Once the tape been marked as overwrite prtected, the system will not able to write to it and ask me for new tape.
Has anyone experience the same issues? What is the resolution?
Just setup on BE2010 nas/iscsi backup. Done before but now cannot get working. Report shows media capacity 0. Any ideas how to fix?
hi, i have a repeated problem while the server performing its scheduled backup, i tried to run backup test and it as successfully done then i tried to make backup and successfully done too, but the problem occurred in the scheduled backup.
N.B
i have more than 7 servers but this is the only one who make error.
The error is :
(Backup DAG Incremental -- The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange was not used to create the last full backup of this database. You must use the Exchange Agent to run a full backup before you run a differential or incremental backup).
kindly advice
Dear All,
I was referring to this KB - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH218366
Which is telling me backup exec will not work if I have Exchange 2013 SP1 with IP Less DAG. This is a big surprise to me because is vendor is telling that new feature is not supported. I could see Symantec gets the product update before the release of it but the backup exec was not update even after few months of Exchange 2013 SP1.
Does it mean we should stop using backup exec and look for other backup options?
or
Should we expect a hotfix sooner.

Hallo,
